This is an entertaining standalone series opener. It features Kai, a two hundred year old vampire who was turned on the battlefield. A hundred years ago, he was recruited by Dark Company, an agency of assassin's who contract for the government. Six months ago the loner crossed paths with a human woman who intrigued him to the point that he followed her to a diner where she lost herself in work while she ate dinner. And he began sitting in a booth in the corner every night to "make sure she's safe". Recently, he got a new assignment that doesn't seem right, however.Olivia Sabin is a scientist at Standard Biotech where she's working sixteen hour days on a new vaccine. When she stumbles on documents and a video that shows a secret experiment gone wrong and corruption of her formula, she realizes she has been used. She knows she will need help to right the wrong and that there is only one person she can turn to. She believes that the mysterious male who follows her into the diner each night is enhanced, as was the test subject in the video. So she comes up with a plan to meet him, not knowing he is focused on doing the same. And that Kai will have to make a very difficult decision.

Shifters and vampires and a sexy smart scientist, what a great combination. Full of action and tension this story rocks!
Great storyline, believable characters and lots of love. Best kind of story ever! Makes you wish that Vampires and shifters were real.
My first book by this author & I truly enjoyed it. Definitely a different type of book, but you'll fall in love with all the characters. Can't wait to see where this group goes.
Finally, a h that is not a 21 y/o virgin. Olivia has a PhD in immunology and is in her late 20 (making her seem middle aged). Really good plot, also. There were a few, small, issues with the book, sometimes it didn't transition well from scene to scene. I loved the premise! Really enjoyed it. Four fangsbon this one!
You know it's one hell of a good story if it feels like you're good friends with each of the characters personally. That's how you'll feel after reading Kai. I laughed and cried with the family of shifters and vampires and our feisty, intelligent, human heroine, Olivia. This book had an amazing depth to it as all the characters were "fleshed out" to a degree that you understood their POV as it related to the underlying storyline. The visuals Valerie Ullmer produces makes reading her novel, so damn enjoyable!

She knows she will need help to right the wrong and that there is only one person she can turn to. This was a pretty good first book in a new series to me. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling I am looking forward to reading the next book.
Kai, the first book in the Dark Assassins series was lighthearted and while the characters did not completely grip me they were not terrible either. The plot fell slightly short, considering their profession I had been expecting something darker. Additionally I was slightly disappointed with the villain, expecting something more complex. The main character Liv was too compliant and too nice, in fact every character in the book is too nice, perhaps it's the cynic in me but it just fell wrong.
Nonetheless, this was an enjoyable read so if you are looking for a light read with decent editing you will want to give this a shot.
